  • Dobie Ann: Joan Fields was a friend and colleague for many years. I will always remember her to have been a generous, sensitive person. She taught more than the subject matter in her classrooms, and her kindness to students from other countries was admired by all. I remember in particular how her easy laughter calmed many a tense situation. I am saddened that she is gone. Ann B. Dobie

  • James McDonald: Joan was a wonderful teacher who was loved by her students and her colleagues in the English Department at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. I remember that she and Bert were among the first to welcome me to the department when I arrived in 1987. Joan really helped us out when we needed to find someone to direct the Writing Center in the mid-'90s, even though she had a heavy teaching and was writing a dissertation. I admired how she managed to finish her Ph.D. with all her other responsibilities. But I think most people here remember her as a warm and caring friend.
